Victoria International Airport Information
Victoria Airport, IATA code YYJ, is found near the city of Victoria on Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. It is a busy air hub for the region and operates flights to domestic Canada destinations, U.S. cities and seasonal flights to Caribbean destinations. Dating back to 1939 as a simple grass airstrip, the airport has been upgraded over the years to its present configuration with a single terminal building with nine gates, three luggage carousels and a two-storied departure lounge. Customs and Security Customs checks are located after the international baggage claim and must be done before entering the pre-security public area. Canada has a list of prohibited items which includel things like counterfeit currency, narcotics and unlicensed firearms. There is also a list of restricted items which are only allowed to be brought into the country under specific circumstances, so research these before traveling, and be prepared to declare these on arrival- the most important to remember is any animal or plant products including food. Security is a requirement for all departing passengers who will be screened as they pass from the public area of the terminal into the post-security area. The purpose of these are to check both passengers and their hand luggage for potential weapons. If you are not comfortable with the screening procedure, there are often alternatives such as a pat-down, however security checks are compulsory. Liquids, aerosols and gels are considered a potential threat so must be carried in containers of 100 millilitres or less and collectively put in a 1 litre clear, resealable bag to show security staff.
